Nudity was Tipper Whore‘s last wish at Friday night’s Funeral Show, and their crowd at Nashville’s Springwater Supper Club and Lounge was sweating in heat and ready to oblige. In the last of five costume changes, front man Ryan Breegle coyly teased, “If someone wants to come up here and get naked, now’s your last chance.” Sexx‘s Dylan Jones didn’t need asking twice. Dylan hurriedly hopped on his left foot and bent to remove his right shoe. He did the same on the other foot and then peeled off his shirt overhead. Next went his pants and trunks until finally, there Dylan stood naked cupping his manhood and ready for his “KWK,” which is Tipper Whore shorthand for “Kocaine with Ke$ha.” Dylan slipped back into his drawers to crowd surf to the climax, Electric Six’s “Gay Bar.”
Tipper Whore’s last hoorah together was one hot funeral for a $5 cover. The night’s downpour outside caused the Springwater to steam in coital delight as the band blew through selections from their only album Just the Tip. The evening’s foreplay was Sexx, who kicked off the show with gratuitous dry humping from Dylan. The second act Idle Bloom dressed like a bunch of miscreant schoolgirls and gave the Springwater a taste of what Smashing Pumpkins would sound like if Jenny Lewis replaced Billy Corgan.
Shortly before downbeat, NLN bellied up to the bar with Tipper Whore’s Ryan, Megan Kellar (bass) and Kelly Bolick (guitar) for a few pre-show PBRs to reflect on their two-and-a-half years with the band and chat about what’s next its members.
What are your thoughts going into tonight?
M: I’m excited because the show is going to be really fun but sad because it’s our last show. We’ve had a lot of fun for two-and-a-half years. But we’ve all grown close as friends and musicians. There are other things on the horizon.
R: I’m just focused on the show as always! I have a lot of lyrics, Lauren, to keep in my head. But, yes. [We’re] very excited. We’ll see how are hearts are tomorrow.
What are your proudest Tipper Whore moments?
R: So many fun moments! My favorite was possibly the last time we played Springwater. It was amazing because we played with The Fork Hunts. They jumped onstage and sang Birdcloud’s “Do What I Want.” That was very thrilling.
M: Maybe that time we opened for Electric Six? I know there weren’t a whole lot of people at the show, but we had so much fun just talking to them backstage. We’re all fans of them.
K: I feel like our last show at Lipstick Lounge with The Dead Deads — being dressed up as Santa Claus and performing was pretty much the peak of my musical career.
What was your lowest paying gig?
R: We got paid the most when we went to Kentucky!
K: When we leave Nashville we get paid.
M: I think the lowest paying gig we had was at The End probably. I think we made like $10 or something or maybe even no dollars!
R: We gave the $20 we would have made to the touring band Hank and Cupcakes.
M: I mean, the show was great, but the attendance was terrible!
Nashville will miss your concerts in costume. Which show was your favorite costume-wise?
R: The Exit/In! I was [president John F. Kennedy] and Megan was Marilyn [Monroe].
M: Yeah! And Meredith was Jackie O. That was a good one.
K: And we were Secret Service guys.
M: I think the most popular costumes we’ve had were probably our nurse costumes. People always love it when we dress up like nurses.
K: That was the very first show! We were in scrubs. That was probably our best-looking show.
Which venue had your best sound?
R: Lipstick Lounge, strangely. I was shocked! The sound was the best there.
M: I might say the Highwatt. I love the stage. I like the way it sounded.
K: I have to say Tidballs in Bowling Green, Kentucky. I always feel as a band, we play our best there.
M: Tidballs is always a blast — definitely the rowdiest crowd.
R: There was a man that said, ‘Smoke meth, hail Satan,” in the crowd. We’ve never had that except in Bowling Green.
M: Now we say it every time we go back, “Smoke meth, hail Satan, Bowling Green!”
R: They’re thirstier for music in Bowling Green. Here it’s everywhere, but there it’s not.
Tell me about the future. What is everybody doing?
R: So many things! Anything is possible.
M: Meredith and Jason [Goucher] are starting a sports league [called East Nashville Sports]. The rest of the band will be starting other bands! So there’s other projects to look forward to!
K: I just want to say tonight I’m going to play every song like it’s the last time I’m ever going to play it.
R: That was heartfelt!
